Firewood Buying Tip - Ask What Type of Firewood You are Getting.

Ask about the type of wood that is being delivered. You can get a great price on softwood or poplar (aspen) firewood but you will not get the heat value you will out of maple, birch, ash, oak or beech (typical hardwoods found in the Maritimes). Most suppliers will provide a mix of hardwoods and exclude aspen but it is good to ask. I have seen companies advertise aspen for half the cost of maple and birch. While some species such as oak have a higher heat value per cord, often the companies that take the time to separate them charge a premium unless they work in a geographic area where that species is predominant.
